Or at least, that's the expectation going into the latest effort from developer Playground Games in a storied franchise that just keeps getting better. This one has to follow up on Forza Horizon 4 from 2018, which continued the ascent for the series with a 92 Metacritic rating. Playground has maintained the games' quality and iterated so carefully that it's hard to pick a favourite or a standout. That said, 2018's Forza Horizon 4 was undoubtedly the series' boldest step, shifting the emphasis toward an online world and regular in-game updates. At the time, I was a little hard on what I felt was a carelessly disorganised campaign and unfocused persistent multiplayer, while I recognised - but still underestimated - how transformative the weekly changes of season and Festival Playlist updates would be for the game's longevity. Between the Playlist, the game's natural affinity with its British setting, and the later addition of a buzzy battle-royale-style Eliminator mode, Forza Horizon 4 cemented the series' popularity in new ways. At its core, the concept remains similar to previous games in the series. The travelling Horizon Festival has shifted to another location, and once again players have to help it flourish by taking on various races and other missions. This time, Horizon tackles the setting of Mexico and, with the benefit of an extra year of development, soups up not only the breathtaking visuals, but the gameplay and slate of modes, too. Like its predecessor, Horizon 5 can be the strictest simulation experience players desire. The soundtrack of a game is often an overlooked part of what makes things tick, and it’s the same here. You’ll hear the howling engine and screeching wheels of various types of cars, but you’ll also want to take a moment to listen to the DJs on the multiple radio stations, as they quite often have something to say about what you’ve been doing; the authentic accents help to immerse you in the game a little more. Personally, Radio XS and the rock it plays is the finest option available, but I’d go as far to say that they are all worth a listen to be honest. It’s also oddly reassuring that the game has so many accolades, because a lot of games with numerous achievements can feel quite intimidating, especially for completists like us who insist on getting 100% when playing a game.
